The Route

Starting from by the parish church, turn down Church Street. Turn left (E) onto Brook Street, follow this out of Wymeswold (as Narrow Lane). On the sharp right bend continue straight on (Along the path, not the lane to the left).

Follow the path, past the ponds to Hightorn Farm, passing to the left of it. Cross the track and continue, until you reach the A6006. Walk along here for 50m, before crossing over, going down the right-hand side of the house. Head down the hill along the side of the woods and across the stream. Go up the hill, joining Hades Lane beside Pasture Lodge. Turn left (NW).

Walk up here for 1/2km, turning right down Occupation Lane. This can become very muddy, as can the footpath that cuts the corner. Continue down the lane until you reach Back Lane. Cross this and head into Willoughby-on-the-Wolds.

Turn left (W) at the crossroads after the ‘phone box, then right onto West Thorpe. Turn left on the bend, and head diagonally across the field. Cross over the stream (the path is nearer to the pylon than on the map.

Head past Triangle Plantation, skirting the north side, then turn left (SW) just before the track by Woodside farm. Continue in a SW direction past the woods and across the stream. At the t-junction in the paths, turn left, along the line of another stream. Head more south now across this stream towards Mushill Lane.

Turn right along here, taking the left where the track chicanes. Head across the field, then the next one (there is a field boundary missing here somewhere). You will end up in a yard full of wooden sheds. Head out onto Wysall Lane, and turn left (S).

Continue along here until you reach Far Street (A6006). Turn right along here. You should find yourself by the church.

Author's Comments

I walked this in the dark for the Loughborough District Scouts Night Hike 2003. The walk was organised by SCOUGI (the Scouts and Guides Association at Loughborough University). Our Scout troop came home with a win – with our ‘B-team’ coming third. It was a good walk, but there had been heavy rain, and the ground was waterlogged in places- take care, and remember, tread lightly, don’t use a path if it is too wet and muddy you will spoil it. If four-wheel-drive owners are making an effort, so should we be.

There are no toilets I know of on the route- there are bound to be some in the pubs in Wymeswold and Willoughby, and there are some to the south of Wymeswold, off Wymeswold Lane, between the Scout Centre and the playing fields, although these are probably only open when there is a match on.

          Have fun!
